The annual Spring field day of the Eastern Kentucky Draft Horse and Mule
Association had been scheduled for Saturday April 22, but the weather gods didn't cooperate and the fields were way too wet to be worked. As a result,
the event was moved to the following weekend and was held on April 29, 2017 at the farm of Mike and Joyce Downs in Olympia, Kentucky.
Unfortunately, the change in the schedule for this event had a dramatic impact of the attendance and the only horses to be seen were those of our host.
Although a few members stopped by to visit, none of them were able to bring their teams for various reasons. Mike hooked up his new/old stallion "Pete"
for the first time since he acquired him from Charles Orme last winter. He put Pete in the lead along with one of his big geldings and took them down to
plow a few rounds. Pete is about 12 years old and had been worked in the past, so there were no issues and everything went great. Mike had also invited
members of the Bluegrass Antique Machinery Association from Georgetown Kentucky to bring some of their old tractors over to plow. There were a handful of
the BAMA members who showed up along with three tractors. Joyce had set up a great lunch in the barn for eveyone and after lunch, Mike put the horses up,
but the tractor boys went back at it for a few more hours. Although we are primarily a "horse" website, many of the photos from this event are of our BAMA
friends. I hope you enjoy looking at them as much as I enjoyed photographing them. By the way, these were the same fields where the 2016 National Plowing Contest
was held last Fall and where the 2017 Contest is scheduled to be held later this year on October 21st, 2017.
